The Gloom

It would appear as though a new dance rock era is upon us – with bands like MGMT, Foxy Shazam, and even the Yeah Yeah Yeahs causing a commotion over the past couple years.  Of course, Virginia locals – The Gloom – caught the wave just in time and are bringing their own unique mix of “hipster disco” to the floor.  Theyve combined the most energetic of all instruments – from 50’s style guitar and funk style bass, to synthesized keyboard, robotic beats, and electric violin. Sweeeeet.

These guys get inspired by rock music and sci-fi/horror flicks (they even snagged their name from a Russian fantasy horror film – Nightwatch!) and get stoked when they get to play house shows (especially in Richmond).  They’re no strangers to music as they’ve all been playing since they were kids, and drummer Ray has been involved with several other popular local bands.

For those of you who’ve been down with The Gloom since they started (August ’09 to be exact), you’ll be excited to know that they’ve got bigger and better shows AND a full-length album in the works for 2010!  If you’ve never heard of The Gloom then get your arse over to their Myspace music page, what are you waiting for?!

Fun facts about The Gloom:
Addie
plays guitar and is a computer scientist that has an encyclopedic knowledge of zombie films
Jeff
plays several instruments in the band including keyboard and electric violin and is formally trained in musical theory.
Ray
plays drums and enjoys wake boarding and long walks on the beach.
Phil
plays bass and works with autistic children as his chosen profession.
