Flying into the Northern Virginia music scene at an intangible speed is Diesel Pigeons. With polar opposite influences (ranging from pop punk to metal to blues) this quartette has managed to create a synth-driven force blasting to the top of our radar. They’re so good, in fact, that they are the first ever winners of Syke’s Band Of The Month Voting Contest!
After coming together a little less than three years ago, the Diesel Pigeons have put in some long hours not only making music but assembling cd’s, promoting, booking, and generally working their way up. Despite the fact that they all “dabbled in other projects” before this one, they feel that DP is really their “first legit band,” and their authenticity shines through in their first two EP’s – “Sucker” (2008) and “Triple Word Score” (2009). Their music is sort of like a genre-buffet in the sense that you get a little bit of everything; just when you want to classify them as another pop-punk band they throw in some classic rock guitar riffs and rap-infused vocals.
Even though they’d be SYKED to share the stage with bands like Less Than Jake, Weezer, Blink-182 or Pantera, these guys are also quite content to jam with local favorites like The Bigger Lights, Crash Boom Bang, and Boys Will Be Boys (all of whom Diesel Pigeons have played with). However, when asked about their most favorite “real life” show to date they said it was when they played at a venue called “Town” (across the street from the 9:30 Club in D.C.) for the 2008 Exposure Music Festival. The boys also recall a “dance-off onstage while we played a cover of ‘Crank That’ by Soulja Boy. We played shirtless of course to keep the mood consistent.” It’s just that type of rebellious fun you might expect from a Diesel Pigeons’ show, along with their distinctive musical offerings , that keep their fans devoted.
And just as their fans are true to them, Diesel Pigeons remain faithful to their fans. In fact, they attribute most of their inspiration as coming “from our friends and fans that make time to spread the word about us, come out to shows, and hang out with us if you just meet us at shows” and say that “all the support we get makes us want to go a little further as a band.”
Fun/Random Facts about Diesel Pigeons:
- If he’s not playing music you might find Eric (drums, age 18) watching “Love, Actually” alone in his basement…crying.
- Jonah (guitar, age 21) is slingin’ hockey pucks (on the road, not ice) when he’s not rocking out.
- When Zac (bass, age 15) has some down time you’ll probably find him zoned out in front of the TV watching old cartoons.
- Evan (guitar/vocals) enjoys daydreaming in front of the computer checking out guitars he will most likely never own.
